When the 285th Field Artillery Observation Battalion moved south of Malmedy, American soldiers found themselves moving into a foreign region where it was difficult gauge local sympathies. There was good reason: the German speaking section of southeastern Belgium was one of the most culturally confused regions of modern Europe.
